Wood, composite or tile terrace: which decking to choose?

What is terrace decking?
Terrace decking is the surface finish of an outdoor space (balcony, loggia, roof terrace or ground-level garden) that determines its aesthetic appeal, comfort of use, durability and maintenance requirements, in direct interaction with climatic conditions and the daily habits of its users.
Choosing the right surface for your Parisian terrace or balcony is a decision that commits you for several decades. Between natural wood, composite and porcelain stoneware tiles, the options are plentiful — but each has very different advantages and constraints. This comprehensive guide helps you make the best choice based on your use, budget and the specifics of the Île-de-France climate.
Natural wood: warmth and authenticity
Available species
Exotic hardwoods:
- Ipé (Lapacho): Extremely hard (Class 1), naturally insect and fungus resistant. Lifespan 25–40 years. Chocolate brown colour. Price: €100–200/m² installed.
- Teak: Exceptional resistance to water and UV. Weathers naturally to silver-grey. Price: €150–300/m² installed.
- Cumaru: Comparable resistance to Ipé at a slightly lower price.
European woods:
- Douglas fir / Larch: Naturally resistant French wood, good durability without treatment. Price: €60–130/m² installed.
- Treated pine (Class 4): Most economical, requires more maintenance. Price: €40–90/m² installed.
Comfort
Natural wood offers unique underfoot comfort — pleasantly warm in summer (unlike tiles), flexible and non-slip. It's the preferred material for relaxation spaces: sun lounging, children's play areas, barefoot gardens.
Maintenance
| Frequency | Action |
|---|---|
| Every spring | Low-pressure wash + black soap |
| Every 2–3 years | Apply protective oil or wood stain |
| Every 5–7 years | Light sanding if heavy greying |
| Annually | Inspect boards (cracks, lifting, rot) |
Without maintenance, wood turns grey and deteriorates. Oiled exotic hardwoods retain their colour; unoiled wood weathers to natural silver-grey.
Price summary
| Species | Installed price | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Treated pine | €40–90/m² | 15–20 yrs |
| Douglas / Larch | €70–130/m² | 20–30 yrs |
| Ipé | €100–200/m² | 25–40 yrs |
| Teak | €150–300/m² | 30–50 yrs |
Wood-plastic composite: the modern compromise
What is composite?
Composite is a blend of wood fibres (30–70%) and polymer (recycled plastic). It replicates the look of wood while eliminating its main drawbacks. Two generations exist:
- 1st generation: wood fibre + polyethylene. Lower cost but more susceptible to staining and scratching.
- 2nd generation (co-extruded): wood core + pure polymer protective shell. Highly resistant to stains, UV and scratches. Recommended.
Maintenance
Near zero maintenance — the main advantage. Annual low-pressure wash with soapy water is sufficient. Watch for organic stains (leaves, rust) on 1st generation products — treat promptly.
Price summary
| Type | Installed price | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| 1st generation composite | €60–120/m² | 20–25 yrs |
| Premium co-extruded | €120–250/m² | 25–35 yrs |
Advantages
- Zero treatment required
- Good durability (25–35 years for co-extruded)
- Wide colour range and convincing wood-look
- Good UV and moisture resistance
- Anti-slip by design
Disadvantages
- Can feel slightly "plastic" up close
- Can get very hot in direct summer sun (especially dark colours)
- Higher cost for premium products
- Individual board repairs are difficult
Porcelain stoneware tiles: durability and easy care
Types for terraces
- Full-body porcelain stoneware: near-zero water absorption, ideal for exteriors. R11 or R12 anti-slip rating for outdoor use.
- Large format slabs: 60×60 to 100×100 cm — very on-trend
- Wood-look tiles: plank format, wood aesthetic with tile benefits
- Slabs on pedestals: adhesive-free installation, ideal for flat roofs (drainage access preserved)
Comfort
Tiles have a more "mineral" feel — cold in winter, potentially hot in direct summer sun. For barefoot use, less comfortable than wood. Ensure minimum R11 anti-slip rating (R12 for rain-exposed areas).
Maintenance
Near-zero maintenance — tiles' main advantage. A jet wash and occasional moss remover is all that's needed. Totally resistant to stains, frost, sun and household cleaners.
Price summary
| Type | Installed price | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Standard porcelain stoneware | €50–100/m² | 30–50 yrs |
| Premium large format (installed) | €80–180/m² | 40–50 yrs |
| Slabs on pedestals | €100–220/m² | 30–50 yrs |
